In the center of Gouda, the Goudshof project was recently completed, a residential complex that not only offers 72 modern apartments, but also a beautiful roof garden where residents can enjoy peace and nature in the middle of the city. Located on top of an underground parking garage, this roof garden is an example of innovative urban development that involved multiple parties. FURNS Street Furniture supplied several custom-made elements.
Mathijs van Haren, technical product manager at FURNS, looks back on the project and the company's role. "We supplied a number of custom products that were essential to the design of the roof garden," says Van Haren. "Specifically, we supplied corten steel benches, pedestals and seats, all completely tailored to the architect's design. The wooden seats, which give a warm and natural look, were manufactured in collaboration with our sister company Awood."
Approximately 45% of the roof garden consists of greenery and 55% of paving, with diagonally running tile paths winding through the garden and leading to a central plaza with benches. "Our corten steel benches fit this design perfectly," Van Haren explains. "Not only are they durable and weather-resistant, but they also add to the robust look of the garden."
The Goudshof project was a collaboration between several parties. The design of the roof garden came from architectural firm Piet Onderwater & Partners, while construction was carried out by construction company Van Wijnen, Stolwijk branch. The technical elaboration and construction of the roof garden were provided by idverde Realisatie, Utrecht office. The development of the entire project was in the hands of Vesteda and AM.
"The collaboration with these parties was excellent," notes Van Haren. "We worked closely together to ensure that our products perfectly matched the design and practical requirements of the garden. It's always nice to see how everything comes together in the final result."
Another important aspect of the collaboration was the custom production provided by FURNS. "Everything we supplied was manufactured to order," Van Haren says. "This meant that we were involved in the process from the beginning, so we could ensure that our products met the architect's and contractor's exact requirements."
Now that the roof garden is fully landscaped and the plants have grown considerably, the result is a vibrant and attractive outdoor space that is not only functional, but also provides a pleasant place for residents to stay. "It's great to see the garden come to life," says Van Haren. "The variety of plants and the clever layout of the garden ensure that this space will only become more beautiful over time."
FURNS' contribution to the Goudshof project is an example of how quality street furniture can contribute to the livability and aesthetics of urban spaces. Thanks to the close cooperation between all parties involved, Gouda has gained a new green oasis.
