Right now there is a lot of attention on the climate-proof garden. More and more municipalities are encouraging this and more and more people want to think along and contribute to solutions for a better climate. The garden is an excellent tool for this. Greening a garden is the solution that is good for more biodiversity, but also makes the garden more pleasant and cooler. Therefore, there is an increasing focus on less paving and more (native) plants, shrubs and trees in the garden.
A green garden also presents challenges. Not everyone has green fingers. Rainwater is crucial for a climate adaptive garden. But too much is not good and neither is too little!
"We think it is important to look at the complete water cycle in the garden." Speaking is Pascal Derksen, Segment Specialist House&Garden at ACO. This cycle is damaged. Flooding, interspersed with persistent drought, makes it difficult to manage a green garden. Many garden owners have too busy schedules to devote much time to the garden. The penchant for convenience is also a major factor. And that makes sense. But fortunately, a sense of responsibility is increasingly emerging, such as the realization that it is actually quite wasteful to use precious and increasingly scarce tap water to water the garden. When you think carefully about how to deal with rainwater in the design and construction of a garden in advance, maintenance becomes a lot easier and the enjoyment can begin for the garden owner!"
"At ACO, we look at the garden from the system chain; from collecting rainwater to reusing it" continues Pascal. "To prevent flooding, you need to collect it in wet periods and retain it in the garden as much as possible. You do this with line drainage gutters, manholes and permeable paving. Drain the collected water as little as possible, but infiltrate it into the garden with infiltration blocks, for example. These work like a sponge and release the water back into the ground in dry periods. Even smarter is to collect water in an underground tank and use it later for e.g. watering the garden. We offer landscapers, gardeners and paving contractors solutions for every step in the cycle of the climate adaptive garden. That's the convenience of everything under one roof!"
Thinking about a climate-proof garden is becoming increasingly important. We would like to tell you more about this on Tuesday 7 , Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 January at the Green Sector trade fair in Hardenberg! You can find us at stand 157. See you then!
