According to Sake Middelbos, the importance of the right tires and axles can hardly be underestimated. "You may not notice it so quickly, but the wrong tires won't get you very far. Just try driving on a loose surface with a tire that is too small, or with too little grip on a slippery surface. Agricultural axles are also often overlooked, but if they no longer meet the proper braking requirements, you may not be allowed on the road.

New regulations, new axis?

Until January 2021, the Netherlands lagged behind in Europe in regulations for driving agricultural vehicles on public roads; even a license plate was not mandatory. The new regulations with mandatory registration also ensure that the government can better monitor compliance with European braking requirements for trailers. In practice, this means requirements for minimum braking deceleration, which means that current axles are no longer always sufficient. "Which axle is needed depends on several factors, but to make it easier we have a selection table on our site," Middelbos says. "Of course, a phone call is always an option. On the other hand, we also see that changes in mowing policies and weed control lead to more weed brushing and an increased risk of punctures.
