Longer mowing through optimized charging and discharging process
Makita introduced its first robotic mower RMD350D Europe-wide in March. The mower is fully waterproof and features Makita's well-known charging and battery technology. "Our dealers are impressed with its simplicity and quality.
"We want to offer the customer a beautiful and perfect lawn. That is why we went back to basics and developed a user-friendly and reliable robotic mower with boundary wire. This way, the buyer is always assured of a beautiful and well-groomed lawn," said Arjen Peeters, Supervisor OPE & Business Development at Makita.
The robotic mower has a built-in 18V battery (BL1850V) from Makita. By optimizing the charging and discharging process, the mower can work for an average of two hours and fifteen minutes after a forty-minute charge. It comes with a three-year full warranty. The machine is suitable for maintenance of lawns up to 3,500 m2. After the simple installation, the mower "takes care" of the work itself: it mows and returns to the charging station when needed. The robotic mower has an automatic height adjustment. For example, if the grass is six inches long at the beginning of the cutting season and the mower is set to a cutting height of 2.5 cm. Then, based on the resistance of the grass on the blade, the mower itself regulates how much length it can cut off most efficiently per round of mowing. As the resistance decreases, the position of the mower blades decreases by half a centimeter. The machine can cut up to 2 cm short.
The robotic mower is equipped with three new brushless motors from in-house: two wheel motors and a blade motor. It also includes a motor for height adjustment. The motors were specially developed for these mowers to be as energy efficient as possible. Peeters: "The mower has good bearings and is fully equipped. It also has the necessary safety features, such as a PIN code alarm, impact and tilt sensors. In addition, the machine has a clear screen and control panel. It is easy to set up and works without an app. So a very complete robotic mower."
Because the charging unit is not in the robot, but in the charging station, the mower is lighter and there is less heat generation. The first reactions from the market are positive, says Peeters. "The first dealers to start working with it have already completed their training. They are impressed with the simplicity and quality of the mowers. They find it very different from what they know and are used to. We ourselves also think it is a great product that enriches our product range." On the day of the launch, the first robotic mower was already sold in the Netherlands.Makita has chosen to sell this mower only through certified robotic mower dealers. Peeters: "Good advice is very important with robotic mowers. The dealer can assess whether the mower is suitable for the garden in question, so that the customer will also be satisfied with the result after installation. In addition, these dealers can also handle the installation, maintenance and any repairs. The customer no longer has to worry about it himself."
RMD350D is Makita's first robotic mower, but the package will be expanded in the near future. "We started with this size because it is the most sold in the Netherlands. Eventually we will put a range where everyone can find the right mower for their size lawn."
